What educators are saying ABOUT SUSAN’S VISITS
“We loved Susan Levine’s author visit at Pinewoods Elementary. Jenny’s First Catch is a beautiful and educational book. Susan’s presentation on all the steps that are necessary to publish a picture book was so interesting. For me as a teacher, the most challenging part of writing is getting the students to edit and revise their work. Susan blew their minds as she explained all the steps in the editing process and the reasons why they were needed! Students also enjoyed seeing the “signature” from the printing press, learning how books are printed, and learning the secret of why all picture books are 32 pages in length. We can’t wait to have Susan visit Pinewoods again soon!”
“Susan Levine’s presentation to our students was fascinating and informative. The students loved hearing how she developed her ideas for her story and showed them the actual publishing process, explaining book signatures and seeing the printing press. Susan even showed our students a YouTube video of her illustrator, who detailed the process of creating illustrations for a picture book. Susan’s presentation was engaging and impactful. The students’ retention of the information she shared with them was evident during her interactive Grab Bag Game. We are so grateful to have had this experience for our students.”
“Susan Levine presented about her informative and heartwarming book, Jenny’s First Catch, at our school. The students and teachers just LOVED her! Her knowledge about and passion for the wildlife in her books were inspiring. She explained the writing/publishing process and encouraged the students to keep a Growth Mindset and pursue their dreams. Best of all, Susan was entertaining and engaging for groups of kids from PK through 6th grade! If you are looking for an author to visit your school, I highly recommend Susan Levine.”
Darby Woods 4th graders love Packard!
Susan Levine autographed over 50 books for Darby Woods 4th graders!
“The presentation was amazing! It was an excellent model of the writing process for our students. When Susan was talking about the editing process one student remarked ‘I do that too!’ Beyond writing, the day offered cross curricular learning in both science and social studies as the students learned about peregrine falcons, the efforts to bring them back from near extinction, the history of key landmarks in Columbus and the publishing process. We often refer back to Susan’s presentation in our classrooms. It was a wonderful educational experience for the 4th graders at Darby Woods.”
Students at Pickerington Elementary created their own Packard page about a favorite place in their hometown of Pickerington, Ohio.
“The Packard program is wonderful! It is a “must see” for every school. The breakout sessions are very educational and well presented. Being a Math-Science based school, it was a great complement to our curriculum.”
“Bravo! The Packard school program is FABULOUS. Teachers and students cannot stop talking about it. The program is fast-paced, very informative and appropriately designed for elementary-aged students. We ALL learned so much. I am happy and honored to recommend this program to anyone who needs convincing.”
Buckeye Valley Elementary is so artistic!
Check out these cute baby falcon chicks that the students at Buckeye Valley created for our visit.
“A great program! Meeting both the author and illustrator made for a very engaging and informative morning. The students and teachers really enjoyed learning fun facts about the Columbus sites in the book and hearing about the illustration process. They even got to see an original painting and the “dummy” book. And, of course, Legacy the peregrine falcon was a showstopper!”
“Fabulous presentation! Susan weaves science, social studies and art into an engaging and informational program, perfect for our 3rd-5th grade. Teachers and students alike have commented about how much they enjoyed the day and all that they learned, from falcons to bookmaking! The presentation was right on target for students - a perfect mix of listening, asking questions and playing interactive games. I, myself have generated a list of ‘day trips’ to take this summer from both books!”
“The Harriett’s Homecoming author program nicely integrates reading, writing, social studies, and science subject areas in a highly engaging and interactive way modified for primary and intermediate grades! I especially enjoyed the break-out sessions that provided in depth time with the author as well as the naturalist from Raptor Incorporated. Meeting Lucy, the peregrine falcon, was certainly a highlight for our students! Teachers and students, alike, were inspired by the visit.”
“All of the teachers loved the visit! I personally loved the up close and personal look you provided to all of the students about the actual book writing process. This perspective was a unique experience for our students to get to know your book and you as an author. They were inspired and left energized about not only writing a book but also about exploring the Cincinnati and Columbus cities. Thanks for visiting!””
We had a great day at Etna Elementary. In honor of our visit, students had the opportunity to read in "birds nests" that were created using plastic swimming pools!
“The Packard program is fantastic! The energy and excitement the program brought grabbed and held the attention of all our students, grades 1-5. The students and teachers enjoyed both the large and, more intimate, small break out groups. Our students gained an invaluable experience with Susan and The Bird Sanctuary that they will carry with them.”

“Susan Levine’s author presentation was terrific. It was very professional but yet warm and friendly. I loved the videos of the birds and of Irene. The information on the birds, their bills, and their distinguishing characteristics was clear and interesting. The production of the book, seeing a book ‘signature’, and understanding how the colors are printed is something most people wouldn’t have known.”
